Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The Graham Law Firm, PC was organized in 2006, as the successor to Graham & Smith, LLP, which was formed in 1994. We have been continuously located at the corner of Preston and Mockingbird since formation.
What is your primary product or service?
The attorneys at The Graham Law Firm, P. C. focus their practices primarily upon matters involving: wills and trusts; planning and administration of estates; family owned businesses (including family limited partnerships); and gifts to publicly and privately administered charitable entities. The firm has extensive experience in the tax and litigation issues related to those matters. The firm also specializes in litigation to recover assets and damages, either from another family member or beneficiary, or from a third party such as a trustee, insurance company, or other person who owes money to the beneficiaries. The firm's primary goal is to combine technical excellence in tax, probate procedures, and jury trial litigation with an appreciation of family dynamics.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
When I was young, testing indicated that I would be well suited to being a preacher or a lawyer. I hope because of compassion for others and a willingness to help solve their problems, and not because I speak well (although I am good at expressing myself). After 23 years practicing in first Houston and then Dallas as a partner in one of Texas' finest large law firms, Baker & Botts, LLP, I decided that I wanted to be in full control of the service level, acceptance (or non-acceptance) of clients, and I wanted to continue in the "relationship" practice of law rather than the "transactional" practice of law, a difference involving whether you expect to represent clients over long periods of time. I also do not agree with charging by the hour, a practice which I think discourages efficiency and creates the wrong perception with clients. So I left my Baker & Botts "big law firm partnership" and created a small "boutique" law firm, tailored to how I felt I would want to be represented myself.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our passion for accomplishing what you want is our greatest asset, when combined with our technical expertise and writing of documents to accomplish your goals. We are not selling some prepackaged plan. It is probably worth remembering that we write documents not only for our clients, but for other lawyers all over the country.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One office, in Dallas. But we have clients all over Texas, and in various other states.
